National Apprenticeship Week: IMT Apprenticeship Prepares Workers for Today’s Advanced Manufacturing Environment

Today’s advanced manufacturing environment calls for highly skilled workers and the the Industrial Manufacturing Technician (IMT) Apprenticeship is designed to train workers to both meet industry need and provide a career pathway for workers to advance. The IMT apprenticeship is implemented through a joint labor-management structure and was developed by Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership (WRTP) in collaboration with the AFL-CIO Working for America Institute and the U.S. Department of Labor.

WRTP also brought representatives from key industrial unions including the United Auto Workers (UAW), International Association of Machinists (IAM), United Steel Workers (USW), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM), Sheet Metal Workers (SMART) as well as the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO and a diverse group of manufacturing employers. This ensured that employer, training, and worker interests were aligned in the apprenticeship.

Cassandra Patterson, IMT-registered apprentice from Milwaukee, Wisc., who is a member of USW Local 3740, lauded the program:

I entered the apprenticeship because I love to learn and being invited to learn more about my work was an exciting opportunity. Any time I can increase my knowledge I get excited and jump at the chance. The IMT apprenticeship has allowed me to figure out what I enjoy doing for the company.
