2017 National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive

Richard Trumka • February 28, 2017 • Washington, D.C.

Brothers and sisters, I’m Rich Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO.

Congratulations on the most generous and productive single-day food drive in history, and long-lasting, too. Twenty-five years is impressive.

When it comes to logistics, no one can match the Letter Carriers.

You deliver to 156 million residential and business customers six—–and increasingly—seven days a week.
This comprehensive postal network connects suburban, rural and urban America throughout all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam—linking our society to one another and businesses to customers.

That’s why it was no surprise the Letter Carriers could pull off a food drive of this magnitude. And we at the AFL-CIO are proud to have partnered with you from the beginning.

Listen, we know the difference between a working family and a hungry family is no more than a layoff, a chronic illness or a lack of opportunity.

And you’ve made it your mission to ensure that no child goes to bed with an empty stomach.

So I want to say keep up the good work. Keep caring. Keep making a difference. God bless you and the work you do.
